The Proof Is in the Fruit

Read 1 John 2:3-6

We know that we have come to know Him if we keep His commands. Whoever says, "I know Him," but does not do what He commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys His word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in Him: Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did.

How do you know for sure that you are a Christian?

When I was a little girl, I was afraid of dying and finding out the hard way that I was not really a Christian. I prayed the sinner's prayer and asked Jesus into my heart almost every night. I desperately needed some assurance of my salvation!

Now that I have grown up in both my age and my faith, I know that I am saved because I have confessed that I am a sinner and I have confessed that Jesus is my Lord and my Savior. I know from Ephesians 2:8 that I am saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus. And I know from John 10:28-29 that I am His and no one can snatch me out of His hand.

But the evidence of my faith and the proof that I have been saved is in my lifestyle and my behavior. I am changing. Not overnight, but gradually. The more I know Him, the more I love Him. And because I love, I seek to obey Him. I try to follow His example and walk in a manner that honors Him.

However, my efforts to improve myself will never be enough. I am not able to be fully obedient in my own strength. Thankfully, when I accepted Christ, I was given the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit's power in me that is transforming my heart, changing my desires and renewing my mind. The fruit of the Spirit is growing in my life.

Look for evidence of the Holy Spirit working in your life. Christians are sinners who are being changed. Is your faith producing fruit? The proof is always in the fruit.

Lord, I want to be obedient to You. Guide my actions and convict my heart by your Spirit so that I will choose to live in a way that brings honor to You. Thank you for saving me by your grace. Amen.
