Working for God
Read Colossians 3:15-17
"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
• When it comes to your work, do you "do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus"?
Regardless of our calling in life, and no matter what we do to earn money, our faith in God can pull us through tough situations and make us better able to serve the Lord. Our faith is as necessary to us as breathing; we shouldn't want to do any job without it. It's like our skin; it's part of us. And that's how it should be--no matter where we work, and regardless of whether we're male or female.
So, what exactly does the Bible say about work? God's Word does not suggest that any of us should sit passively at home, doing nothing. To the contrary, Scripture indicates that men and women should be productive.
In the popular passage on the characteristics of a noble or virtuous woman, Proverbs 31, we find a woman engaged in real estate transactions and business endeavors that turn a profit. She demonstrates managerial skills, as well as benevolence to the poor, caring for the family, and serving the Lord. It is important to note that her husband is considered blessed by his peers because he has such an industrious wife. Obviously neither one of them were threatened by the success of the other. This is as good a model for today as it was for yesterday.
So, whether we're chasing sales at the office or chasing toddlers at home, we should make our faith as "necessary as breathing." Don't take on any role without God as the foundation.
Lord, it seems as if the world throws away people who aren't useful. Yet you tell us that everyone who has breath is useful in Your kingdom. Help me to simply believe this and to share this truth with others. Help me to play my part in the Kingdom. Amen.
