You Belong Here

Read Ephesians 2:19-22

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In Him you are also being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

Reflect

When have you felt like an outsider?

Have you ever visited a foreign country but you couldn’t understand anyone because you didn’t know the language? Maybe you even offended someone because you were unaware of the social customs. No doubt, you definitely felt like an outsider! Or maybe you recently moved into a new community and you don’t know anyone yet.

It feels like everyone else has connections and everyone else belongs but you feel alone even though you are surrounded by people. It’s hard feeling like a stranger.

Up to this point in our study of Ephesians, Paul has been explaining that, in Christ, the Jews and the Gentiles are no longer separate. They are one. In His work on the cross, Christ unified them. He abolished the laws that kept them divided and brought both near to God. Paul goes further here to say that the Gentiles are no longer strangers or aliens among the Jews.

They are now fellow citizens in God’s household. The Jews are no longer the only children of God. Everyone who is in Christ is considered a “saint” and as such they belong to the household of God.

But this house for God is still being built. Paul says that Jesus Himself is the cornerstone of the foundation. He is the stone that is load bearing. Without Him as Cornerstone, the walls would crumble. The apostles and the prophets laid the rest of the stones as a firm foundation when they proclaimed Christ and His Word.

The rest of the structure is made up of the saints.  Believers in the foundation of Christ and His apostles’ teaching are the building blocks of God’s temple. As more and more believers are added into the family of God, more stones are laid. This temple is God’s dwelling place where His Holy Spirit resides.

Friends, we are His temple. He lives in us. And each believer plays a critical role in the building up of His temple. Not only do you belong in Him, but you are important.

Pray

Jesus, You are a firm foundation. Thank You for building me a place to belong. Amen.
