A done deal
Pastor Mark Jeske
The New York press corps loved Yogi Berra because he delighted them with the most quirky and delicious quotes. Commenting on the possibility of ninth inning comebacks he said once, “It ain’t over until it’s over.” Funny, but people derive a certain sense of hope from thinking that it’s never over, that there will be endless chances for do-overs and many different ways to arrange a successful transition in the next life. Sorry. Ain’t gonna happen.
Scripture teaches two crisp and important truths. One, people have their time of grace and then will immediately face judgment—no endless cycles of reincarnation where you can circle back and have another go at achieving a good enough life. “Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many, and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him” (Hebrews 9:27,28).
Did you note the sweet second point? The work needed to bring everlasting life to you and all believers is not ongoing, a work in progress, or iffy in any way. It’s a done deal. He was sacrificed on the cross once and for all. Lift up your face and your eyes to heaven. Look for him! Watch for him! Wait patiently for him!
He’s almost here—come soon, Lord Jesus!
