Buried in Jesus’ jersey
A while back, Carson Wentz, the quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, left people in tears. A video went viral of Lukas, a ten-year-old boy with terminal cancer who loved the Eagles. Wentz sent him a video, then brought Lukas to the Eagles’ stadium, introduced him to teammates, and made him a smoothie. When Lukas died 13 days later, he was buried in Wentz’ uniform.
Carson Wentz, a regular human, was brought to tears with the immensity of that knowledge. Here he was, only a 24-year-old man at the time, so beloved that a family buried their young son in Wentz’ jersey.
We’ve been buried with a jersey too—Jesus’ jersey of righteousness. (Some people call it a robe. Po-tay-to. Po-tah-to.)
When we were baptized, Jesus not only forgave our sins, but he also put his jersey on us. We are on his team. We walk around knowing that—even though we will all die—because Jesus defeated death, we live a new life here on earth. And we will live a perfect life in a new heaven and a new earth where there is no more sickness, mourning, pain, or death. For ten-year-olds. For quarterbacks. For us.
For now, until we live in the place with no more crying, it brings us to tears with the immensity of that knowledge.
