April 27
No lie
Linda Buxa

A fact-checker report from the Washington Post says that in President Trump’s first year, he made 2,140 false or misleading claims. By day 558 in office, that had risen to 4,229 claims.

Now, I have no idea if they were really false and misleading or whether the Washington Post made false or misleading claims about those false or misleading claims. All I know is I was filled with gratitude that no human puts a fact-checker on me, publishes it in a newspaper, and posts it on a website.

See, I know that I mislead and lie to others; I skew the truth to make myself look better. I know that I even lie to myself, rationalizing why my sin wasn’t really sin or that it wasn’t destructive.

I could easily beat myself up about this, which is why I love the two reminders in Colossians 3:9,10: “Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”

Reminder one: Do not lie. Because I still lie, I need to hear the command.

Reminder two: I have a new self. “Liar” is not my identity.

When Jesus died on a cross, he took the punishment for all the times I lied (and still lie) and gave me his record of having never lied.

I’m thankful that God’s fact-checker—the Bible—tells me this truth.
