April 8
Devoted to the Word
Pastor Mike Novotny

In describing Christianity, the brand-new movement that was about to change the world, Dr. Luke tells us, “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching” (Acts 2:42). When those Christians did life together, they consistently talked about the apostles’ teaching. And what did the apostles teach? Read Acts 2:1-41 and you’ll find the answer—Jesus. Jesus’ identity. Jesus’ sacrifice. Jesus’ cross. Jesus’ resurrection. The early Christians devoted themselves to the Bible and the Jesus at the center of it.

And the best groups of Christians today devote themselves to the same thing. Try to read the Bible by yourself, and it will confuse you. But show up with other Christians and humbly admit, “I don’t get it,” and you will grow. In fact, despite what your pride might tell you, admission of ignorance is what makes your faith better! Because in your spiritual family, God has grouped together decades-old Christians and those still wet from their baptisms. He’s gathered people who couldn’t find Habakkuk with a gun to their heads and those who know Paul’s Romans chapter 1 quote of Habakkuk chapter 2 helped the reformer Martin Luther grasp the gospel for the first time.

Here’s the tough news: The Bible can be a hard book to understand. But here’s the good news: Your Father has put people in your path who can help you understand it. And love the Jesus who’s in it. So let’s devote ourselves together to the teaching that changed the world.
