December 21
What do you mean “repentance”?
Pastor Mark Jeske

Contrary to what a lot of people think, it is not their sins that threaten to put them in hell forever. It is their lack of repentance.

God has a lot of patience with sinners. He knows that we are weak. It is for that reason that the Father sent the Son to live and die for us so that when we die we might live again. The great work of Christ brings God’s favor and forgiveness to all, and those who believe it have it. Repentance involves three changes in a sinner’s mind and heart: 1) honest acknowledgement of one’s sins and acceptance of personal responsibility; 2) faith in Christ the Savior, trusting in his words of forgiveness; 3) sincere desire to amend one’s life. “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy” (Proverbs 28:13).

That sounds simple, but it isn’t in practice. Not because we can’t understand the process. It’s that we’re so reluctant to do it. Just as alcoholism counselors know they have to hammer on a problem drinker’s willingness even to admit he or she has a problem, in the same way the words “It’s my fault” don’t want to come out of our mouths.

Stop struggling. Stop pretending. Stop evading and avoiding. Just tell God the truth (he knows it anyway). Dump the bag, all of it, and let the Savior’s love wash over you.

You will find mercy.
