February 21
Open a window
Jason Nelson

I don’t think infiltrational is a word. My computer put a red line under it suggesting it isn’t, but I tricked it into accepting it by adding it to my dictionary. I know confrontational is a word, and it’s our tendency when we meet people whose ideas don’t sync with the Christian worldview. We are tempted in good conscience to argue the point. As they say, “to defend the faith.” But any kind of defensiveness is counterproductive communication. People stop listening because they don’t like our tone. Door closed. They feel put down because they have gaping holes in their knowledge of the Bible. Those gaps are our opportunity to slip in there like fresh air through an open window.

There’s a lot of stale thinking in a room full of people. Dead air lingers around people dead in their sins. It gets recirculated when people exchange very common and very cynical ideas. That’s just suffocating. We have a different outlook because the resurrected Jesus breathed on all of his disciplesand empowered them: “If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven” (John 20:23). We are forgiven and deputy forgivers. Our thinking is freshened up with all Scripture, which is “God-breathed and useful for teaching” (2 Timothy 3:16). We can open a window on any discussion when we listen with respect, make sure we understand why people think what they do, and graciously offer insights that reflect the Bible’s teachings.

Urgent goal for an urgent need!

Help reach a $116,000 goal by February 28 to reach a generation of young people who are disengaging from their faith . . . and are increasingly leaving the church.

And when you give today, we’ll send you the book More Than Enough to say thanks for helping share Jesus’ love with more young people. As you face circumstances in life that cause you to doubt and worry, the empowering truth from this book will remind you all over again of the greater reality that’s in your life. And that’s Jesus.
