Captive thoughts
Linda Buxa

Just the other day my son said, “Sometimes I wish I could just say everything I am thinking!”

I get that, don’t you? I mean, I would love to just let those thoughts fly! Ah, what sweet relief to say what is really on our minds!

Of course, I am not talking about the nice, sweet, thoughtful things. I am thinking about saying the mean things. The thoughts that I let stew, simmer, and boil. The ones that make my eyes glare and my chest tighten. The ones that would probably leave a trail of pain and tears.

Thankfully, the Holy Spirit—who lives inside of me and gets all the credit for this—reminds me of the truth: “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ”(2 Corinthians 10:5).

Our thoughts are like evil minions frolicking around, spreading toxic thoughts, and enjoying the anxiety they work in us. Those thoughts set themselves up against the knowledge of God that calls for speaking the truth in love, which calls for patience, words that heal. The apostle Paul suggests that we throw those anti-kingdom thoughts in jail, no longer giving them permission to wreak havoc.

A drawback of our current society is that moral relativism and personal freedom have become such a rallying cry that we have forgotten personal responsibility—even in our own minds. Just because we can give full rein to our thoughts, doesn’t mean we should.
