Think before you drink
Pastor Mark Jeske

The big breweries still advertise heavily on television, guaranteeing that if you buy and consume their products, you will have much more fun and romance in your life. But aware of alcohol’s destructive power and nervous about lawsuits, the companies make sure the ads end with this: “Drink responsibly.”

Holy Communion is a big deal. It is the holiest thing that people can do this side of heaven. It is a direct encounter with the very body and blood of the Son of God, and God says that he views disrespect shown to those holy things as disrespect to Christ himself. Ignorance is no excuse. Think before you drink. “People ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink of the cup” (1 Corinthians 11:28).

So what does it mean to examine yourself? Four things: 1) Recognize that evil lives inside your heart and that you have sinned against God in thought, word, and deed. Admit it without excuses or blaming. Know that you need a Savior to keep you from condemnation. 2) Rejoice that your Savior Jesus has suffered, died, and risen again to purchase your freedom. 3) Realize that he gives you his body and blood to guarantee your forgiveness. 4) Reaffirm your desire to live a newer and holier life from today on.

Holy Communion is holy food for your soul, to sustain you in your daily warfare against Satan and to comfort your heart with the gospel. Enjoy the Supper!
