Listen to your conscience
Pastor Mark Jeske

Even non-Christians know that they have a conscience. In popular imagery they may feel that there is a good angel sitting on one shoulder and a little demon in a red suit sitting on the other. Each whispers contradictory instructions in the nearest ear.

There is such a thing as natural knowledge of God. People know that there is a higher Power of some kind, and they know that this Power has established good and bad, right and wrong. Even people who have never cracked a Bible have a pretty good grasp of God’s moral law. It’s what keeps all societies on earth from tearing themselves apart, putting some brakes on the mad impulses of the evil one in us.

People listen to the “little devil” at their peril: “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened” (Romans 1:21). Yielding to sin contrary to one’s conscience is addictive, and slowly the good voice gets softer and softer. In judgment God gives people over to their evil desires and all the terrible consequences that ensue.

God expects people to listen to the “good angel” (i.e., our conscience). Anyone eager to hear the voice of the true God behind the voice of conscience can hear him speak in the pages of Scripture. It is there that people will find the answer to life’s riddle that even conscience cannot provide: Jesus Christ.
