All the wondering isn’t done
Jason Nelson

I wonder what ethical challenges or unintended consequences may come from artificial intelligence and machines that learn. They are behind innovations like driverless cars, Alexa and Watson, better product distribution, and more efficient capital markets. If past is prologue, we will be okay. There will be some fussing and fuming. Some old guy will say something like, “If God intended men to fly, he would have given us wings.” And then we will see that the blessings outweigh the risks. The fact is that machines can do some things better than people.

Except wonder. So far that is a distinctively human capacity. Modern marvels exist because people wondered about them. The Christian community has a contribution to make. We can amaze the human spirit with the accomplishments of God and merits of Jesus in a world we have never seen before. All the moral guidance people need hasn’t been given, all the uplifting hymns haven’t been written, and all the breathtaking art isn’t already in cathedrals.

We have seen God’s wonders in the making. The Bible tells us more are to come. “Many, LORD my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you” (Psalm 40:5). God is incomparable. What more can we do to help other people believe he is wonderful too?
