They won’t know for sure
Jason Nelson

When I was teaching, I had to cowboy up for a consultation with a mama bear who was pretty tough on her cubs. We were meeting to discuss why her boys weren’t doing better in school. The one in my class compensated for insecurity with passive-aggressive negligence in schoolwork. I had a theory. I told her bluntly, “Troy doesn’t think you love him.” She growled, “That’s ridiculous. Of course I love him. He should know that. Why, I have given him . . .” And then she listed all the expensive toys and gadgets that filled their home. When I could get a word in, I asked, “Have you ever told him?” Dead silence.

I’m not sure that actions always speak louder than words. Actions can hint at love’s existence. But should anyone have to work hard to come to that conclusion? And I am a little suspicious of the actions of folks who just won’t say the only words that matter. The people we love won’t know for sure unless we tell them.

I don’t know what girl Solomon was thinking about in his Song. But she felt secure in his love because he expressed it clearly:“My beloved spoke and said to me, ‘Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, come with me.’ My beloved is mine and I am his” (Song of Songs 2:10,16).She knew for sure he loved her because he told her. So I’m going to put this right out there: Beloved in the Lord, I love you.
