Believers bring blessings
Pastor Mark Jeske

I wonder if Potiphar had any idea that his sudden burst of prosperity was due to the Israelite slave that he had brought into his household. He had bought the young man from traveling Ishmaelites at an Egyptian slave market—what a great move! The kid was bright, honest, reliable, and hardworking. “From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph” (Genesis 39:5).

Potiphar was experiencing the “believer boost.” The favor of God follows his children around—they bring it with them even when they work for heathen employers or governments (like Daniel). Potiphar hadn’t seen the half of it. God had plans to bless the entire nation by elevating Joseph one day to the rank of vice pharaoh.

The prophet Jeremiah had told the few remaining Jews in Judah to yield to the Babylonian captivity, to settle down in the East, work hard, and to pray for the cities to which they had been relocated. If those cities then prospered, so would the Jews (and vice versa).

If I were running a business, even if I weren’t a believer, I would prefer to hire Christians. Of all the workers in the labor pool, they are more likely to bring value to my business because of their greater integrity, work ethic, and the way in which they treat my customers.

Plus they bring the believer boost.
