Reach for a psalm
Jason Nelson

When you’re in the mood to praise the Lord and would like to be poetic about it, reach for a psalm. “My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer” (Psalm 45:1).

When you’re at a table full of food and know it’s all a gift from him, reach for a psalm. “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever” (136:1).

When the diagnosis is serious but the prognosis is good, reach for a psalm. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure” (16:9).

When a hard week ends and you will worship with friends, reach for a psalm. I rejoiced with those who said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord’” (122:1).

When you want to raise a holy ruckus, reach for a psalm. Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet . . . praise him with resounding cymbals” (150:3-5).

When only some flash and boom will do, reach for a psalm. Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked” (77:18).

When you need a little quiet time with him, reach for a psalm. “Be still, and know that I am God” (46:10).

When you’re in the mood to praise the Lord, reach for a psalm.
