You are your children’s refuge
King David is known as being a “man after the Lord’s own heart.”
So when his son King Solomon wrote in Proverbs 14:26, “Whoever fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge,” we can guess he was writing based on his own experience of being raised by a father who respected, praised, and worshiped the Lord.
Fathers, this proverb is just as true for your children today as it was three thousand years ago.
But maybe you don’t feel like quite the hero of faith that legendary David was. It’s easy to think of the ways you’ve failed, isn’t it? Well, don’t forget that Solomon wrote these words even though he knew his father had had an affair with a married woman and sent her husband into battle to be killed. After that, David married her and she eventually became Solomon’s mom.
David was a sinful, forgiven man after the Lord’s own heart. Whatever your sins, you are also a forgiven man after the Lord’s heart. With your heavenly Father as your secure fortress, you are passing along an inheritance of faith to your children. As you pray with them, teach them about integrity, talk with them about God’s promises, and remind them over and over about grace. You are giving them a safe place to hide as they face the world’s relentless attacks.
God designed you for more than you can imagine. And he gifted you uniquely to fulfill his incredible calling! Find out what your spiritual gifts are with the tools in Gifted for More by Dr. Bruce Becker.
