Pastor Mark Jeske

There are many unions in Communion.

There is a breathtaking mystical union between you and Christ as you receive him in the Sacrament. There is a wonderful bond between you and your fellow communicants. The Bible says that all together we are “one loaf of bread,” as it were. And then there is the union between the bits of bread and Christ’s own body, between the wine and the blood of our Savior.

“Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?” (1 Corinthians 10:16). The original Greek word translated as “participation” in this passage has the idea of “fellowship” or “communion,” that is, there is a fusion or welding of these two things together.

So every time you eat the bread of Communion, you are indeed eating bread, but you are also receiving the very body of Christ—yes, the same body whose hands and feet were pierced with Calvary’s nails. Every time you drink the cup of Communion, you are drinking some wine, but you are also receiving the very lifeblood of Christ, the sacrificial payment for your many sins. A court physician named Samuel Kinner put that divine mystery this way in 1638: “I leave to you how this can be; Your Word alone suffices me.”

Me too, Jesus.
