Let’s talk eagles
Jason Nelson

The inspiring symbol of so many things was on the verge of extinction. In 1963 there were just four hundred nesting pairs of bald eagles in the U.S. Over the years, their numbers were decimated by people who hunted them for their feathers and talons and by the widespread use of pesticides that poisoned their innards. The shells of their eggs became too thin to allow baby eagles to survive to the hatching point. But because we all agreed we didn’t want to lose the eagles, they made a comeback. Federal government, state governments, private landowners, and others cooperated to save them. There are now tens of thousands of eagles around America. We can add this to the list of all the things they stand for. They represent what we can accomplish when we work together.

In late winter, I regularly go down to the open water of the big river near my home. I watch the eagles. Ten years ago there were just a couple of them. Today there are dozens. I would have much less appreciation for truths like these had I never seen eagles soar in person: “I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself” (Exodus 19:4). “Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:31).

What else should we save so future generations will have a better understanding of God?
