Live distinguished lives
Linda Buxa

In the world, but not of the world. That’s a phrase that Christians throw around so often you think it’s an actual passage. Really, it’s more of a summary of Jesus’ prayer for us in John 17:14,15: “I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.”

Because Jesus is our brother, we belong to the heavenly family. We need to stop blending in so much that people can’t even tell we follow Jesus. Instead, we stay in the world enough so we can get to know the people around us. We’re influential, sharing the hope that we have.

Daniel lived that way. As a teenager, he refused to eat the meat devoted to the Babylonians gods, yet he still served. In fact, as he worked for the Babylonians, he so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom” (Daniel 6:3).

Daniel’s story is also why Jesus ended his prayer with the plea: protect them. When you find the balance of being in the world but not of it, you will offend people who can’t stand the idea of God. Daniel’s faithfulness got him thrown into a lions’ den, where God’s angel came to protect him. His angel is protecting you too. Count on it.
