March 4
Disruptive Jesus
Jason Nelson

Entrepreneurs change the world with disruptive innovations. The Internet is now the standard for accessing information and has put encyclopedia salesmen out of business. Elon Musk is hoping his Tesla Motors and SolarCity make dinosaurs out of fossil fuels. has brick and mortar retailers scrambling to stay viable. Drone strikes have disrupted warfare. An innovation is disruptive when it captures the marketplace because there’s nothing better.

Jesus disrupted religion. Before he came along the relationship between God and man was based on following tedious rules under the supervision of imperfect clerics. People were used to it that way and there was no incentive to change it. But Jesus was different. “Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself” (Hebrews 7:26,27).

What a novel idea! One sacrifice by a new kind of mediator that is good forever. It is an idea that is still catching on because old habits die hard and getting saved the Jesus way is counterintuitive for many. That’s what makes it disruptive. Therefore he is able to save completelythose who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them” (Hebrews 7:25).
