Personal humility
Pastor Mark Jeske

The third Beatitude gets no respect. “Blessed are the meek? Yeah, right.”

The meek are roadkill in high school hallways, district attorneys’ offices, and Hollywood. If you want to sell books, build a career, get famous, win tournaments, or get wealthy, you’ve got to put yourself forward, destroy your competition, go on the attack, take no prisoners, take no ____ from anybody, right?

Well, hold on a minute. Does anybody care what Jesus thinks? “An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. . . . ‘He who is least among you all—he is the greatest’” (Luke 9:46-48). Jesus not only talked about humble service; he lived it. He exemplified it. He found greater joy in bringing benefit to others than in bringing comfort and attention to himself.

What is it about a small child that Jesus found so compelling? Maybe it’s that small children let others go first or know that they are supposed to be quiet and listen or that they need help to succeed. The more people are full of themselves, the emptier they are of God’s Spirit. The more people obsess about their agendas, the less interest they have in God’s. Tell me something—whose approval do you most crave? Your peers’? The media’s?

Or God’s?

Challenge Grant makes your gift worth TWICE as much!

Generous donors have stepped forward with a $50,000 grant—and they’re challenging friends like you to meet it in full!

That means your gift will be worth TWICE as much to help share the timeless truths of God’s Word through television and digital outreach.

When you give, we’ll say thanks by sending you our new book, Grief Doesn’t Have the Last Word. It will encourage you about how much God loves you, how he brings great blessings out of losses, and how he’s making things turn out for your good.
