Stairway to heaven
Pastor Daron Lindemann

The Lord promises to do for you what he did for Jacob, a man fleeing from the troubles he had made for himself. As Jacob wondered whether or not the Lord—the God of his fathers—was with him, angels appeared to him in a dream, ascending and descending a stairway to heaven (Genesis 28:12). The faithful Lord God was still with Jacob, and he didn’t need to be afraid.

We take comfort in that truth, and we believe that Jesus is the stairway to heaven who connects heaven and earth as the Son of Man in human flesh. “I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man” (John 1:51).

Those with self-sufficient dreams, convinced that they can climb their own ladders of success, fall miserably short. Those full of self-centered decisions, too busy looking out for themselves, miss seeing a Savior or hearing his calling.

Jesus has the power to open the kingdom of heaven to send angel armies on their missions. In his grace and mercy, he opens the kingdom of heaven to receive all believers, connecting them to him now. On the Last Day, he will send his angels to gather all believers, connecting them to heaven forever.

Jacob learned, through the gracious call of God atop a stairway to heaven, that the faithful promises of God comfort us in our sinful foolishness.
