I’m Basically a Good Person
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus…(Romans 3:23-24).
Years ago, a renowned radio shock jock made some offensive racial comments on the air. He said them to be funny, but they ended up hurting many people. It took the threat of his company firing him for him to recognize how serious his offense was.
This provoked a public apology. With cameras rolling, he said; “I have a responsibility to provide a context for who I am and what I do… They need to know that I am a good person who said a bad thing, and there is a big difference.” To drive his point home, he ended his apology with these words; “I don’t need a ‘come to Jesus’ meeting.”
If you buy the premise that you are basically good, you will miss the grace of God because you don’t think you need the grace of God. Here is the truth, and Jesus was very clear on this point: “No one is good–except God alone” (Mark 10:18).
We do need the grace of God. We do need to be justified and declared right in God’s sight. And that’s what happens when you come to Jesus — you are justified freely by his grace.
Our hearts, as Jeremiah wrote, are wicked and beyond cure. But not beyond the cure of God’s grace. God in His goodness reached you in Christ and forgave your sins. He changed your status from sinner to child of God. This is truth that will set you free.
Do you describe your life as full of joy and peace? Or do you, like so many others, wonder "What am I missing?" You long for peace, joy and purpose but fear, self-effort, and anxiety fill your daily life.
What's missing is fully embracing the grace of God. Grace is relevant and essential for daily life. It is grace that empowers you, teaches you, and it is grace that produces joy, peace, and purpose.
