You have every spiritual blessing in Christ!
Praise be to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3).
For the next 8 days, we will look at eight actions that hinder our relationships. I call them Relationship Destroyers.
The first is envy.
To envy is to feel discontent with others because of their advantages or possessions. It is that resentment you feel toward others who have something you desire.
The Greek word for envy is interesting. It means to be filled with zeal. It stems from a word that means to be hot, to seethe, bubble, or boil. Envy is inflammatory; it can simmer for years, or it can explode quickly.
Stephen, as he was telling the story of Israel, said this about the patriarchs: “And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt” (Acts 7:9). They didn’t like Joseph’s favored status with their dad. And they sure didn’t like that he rubbed it in their faces.
Jealousy bubbled and boiled within them. And then it acted. The King James Version says they were “moved with envy.” They had had enough.
Instead of acting patiently, or with kindness toward Joseph, or protecting him, they let envy have the upper hand. They sold their little brother into slavery.
This same envy can bubble and boil in us when we think we deserve what others have. But that’s not love. Love does not envy. It is not a part of God’s nature.
Think about it. God is not resentful over what people in the world have. After all, he spoke and the world came into being. Colossians 1:17 tells us that “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” And as both creator and our Father, he takes delight in being the provider of “every good gift and every perfect gift” (James 1:17).
Ephesians 1:3 tells us that God blessed us with every spiritual blessing in Christ. You have riches of God’s grace in abundance.
Sometimes we forget this good news. And when we do, we take a look at what others have that we don’t. This breeds disappointment and discontentment. Left unchecked, envy starts to bubble and boil in the soul. Act on it and you miss the mark of God’s love.
You don’t have to go down that path. You are a child of God. You have everything you need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). You have Jesus. You are an heir of the king.
Let me ask. Can you think of anything in this world that is more satisfying than being a child of God? Today, thank God for all that you have in Jesus.
If you are feeling discontent today, take a fresh look at all that you have in Christ. Thank him that you have access to the throne of grace…that God’s Spirit lives inside of you…that he remembers your sins no more…that you are his child forever. These are your spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus.
Ask the Lord to use you to show others that all they are looking for in life is found in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
You don’t have to be envious. In Christ, you have it all!
