Making Memories –Cousins Camp

I am sitting by a pond in the heart of the Pocono Mountains waiting for the noise to begin. Inside the very large mountain home we rent each year are our 14 grandkids and their parents, our two sons and daughters-in-law and our daughter and son-in-law. They are all sacked out, exhausted from a long day at the one and only amusement park in these mountains. As I look out over the mist above the pond and listen to “nothing” but the sounds of birds and geese I cannot help but wonder what this annual escapade into the forest for a week we refer to as “Cousins’ Camp” is doing to the memory bank of our beautiful family. You see, every year my wife and I rent a place for our entire family to get away from it all and catch up on what is most important – family and faith in the living Christ.

Making memories for my family is not a mere cliché. It is the driving force behind the lifelong goal of building a strong legacy in Christ. Two nights ago we were getting ready for bed when we could hear a “flash mob” downstairs breaking out their instruments and breaking into an unplanned worship service. Even one of the youngest boys emptied a trashcan and mimicked his older and more accomplished cousin who was playing his wooden box drum. Irreverent laughter often broke out as they tossed in some “non-praise” favorites.  Sharon and I joined them and both of us struggled not to cry with gratitude for the joy we felt and saw in our kids. I thought about that passage in Psalm 98:4 – 9

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst int0 jubilant song with music; make music to the Lord with the harp, with the hard and the sound of singing, with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn – shout for joy before the Lord, the King. Let th sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.  Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the Lord, for he comes to judge th earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.

Memories like these will last forever. Invest in those memories. They will always hold a mental record of every “Cousins Camp.”

An intimate account of the Sharon Betters' struggle with anger, grief, and faith after her teenage son's death.

"In twenty years of women's ministry I have never read such a compelling, painfully real, transparent perspective on grief...Do you know of someone struggling with grief and loss? This treasure needs to be the first gift you place in their hands." Tammy Maltby, co-host of Aspiring Women and author of 'Lifegiving'.

"...Sharon squarely faces personal pain and tenderly offers the realities of faith to provide a journey to hope even through our darkest nights." -Bryan Chapell, Covenant Theological Seminary.

“Recognizing that our lives here on this side of heaven will be fraught with darkness and sorrow, Betters’s experience with grief will encourage and comfort you. With biblical wisdom and gentle insight, she’ll draw your broken heart up to where hers is resting safely in the loving arms of the Savior. I heartily recommend this book.”  -Elyse Fitzpatrick, Author of Idols of the Heart, Give Them Grace
