The Great “YET” – Renewal of the Promise of the Covenant

Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered. And in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” it shall be said to them, “Children of the living God.” (Hosea 1:10)

This is one of the greatest “yets” in all of scripture. As the Book of Hosea unfolds it becomes clear that God does not intend repudiation to be the end of the story for his ancient people. He will use His discipline to draw His people back to intimacy with Him. And He will use the parsonage to demonstrate this. After all, the promise God made to Israel was that He would make of him a great nation and that those who bless him God will bless and those who curse him God will curse. He promised that this nation would be numbered beyond what one can number the stars in the air or the sand on the beach (Genesis 22:17). God’s redemption and salvation plan cannot be thwarted. The gates of hell cannot stand against it.

Abraham, the father of a nation caught this promise.

And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.  (Genesis 15:6 ESV)

What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? [2] For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. [3] For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” (Romans 4:1-3 ESV)

Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.  (Galatians 3:6 ESV)

Israel’s salvation and our salvation must be gained just as Abraham’s was - salvation by grace through faith and not by works of the law. The Lord will meet His people at the same place He has always met His people – on the altar of repentance (Hosea 2:7,16). God will take Israel back to the desert and begin his work with them all over again.

“Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her (Hosea 2:14 ESV).

She shall pursue her lovers but not overtake them, and she shall seek them but shall not find them. Then she shall say, ‘I will go and return to my first husband, for it was better for me then than now.’   (Hosea 2:7 ESV)

“And in that day, declares the LORD, you will call me ‘My husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’  (Hosea 2:16 ESV)

Have you trusted Christ as your Savior and Lord? Is He alluring you into the desert to speak tenderly to you?

There is so much more to this little book that is rich with repeated judgment warnings, but even greater is the powerful description of God’s broken heart and unending love for His people.  You can join me in my verse by verse exposition of this passion-packed story by accessing my current preaching at In His Grip on Lightsource.com. https://www.lightsource.com/ministry/in-his-grip/it-was-the-best-of-times-it-was-the-worst-of-times-404391.html
