Why Does God Still Speak?
Because the Bible is God’s complete Word, some believers question why the Lord still desires to speak to us personally . There are several reasons.
First, the Lord wants to communicate today because He loves us just as much as He loved His children in biblical times. His desire for fellowship and honest conver-sation is just as strong now as it was in the days when He interacted with the Abraham, Moses, and the prophets.
Second, God still communicates since we desperately need His definite and deliberate guidance for our lives. In Scripture, we see accounts of the Lord giving specific directions to His servants. We often fail to realize that we still need His instructions.
Third, God speaks because He knows we need His assurance and comfort today, just as the saints of Bible times did. We all have “Red Sea” experiences when our backs are against the wall and we don’t know where to turn. But just as He parted the waters for Israel, the Lord will act mightily in our life, if we listen and obey.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, God still communicates today because He wants us to know Him. Our number one priority should be to know Him and, once we do, to keep getting to know Him more and more.
As is true of the other people we know in life, our relationship with God cannot be a “one-way street.” There must be a continual flow of back-and-forth communication with Him. That means we don’t do all the talking. We will get to know our Father more intimately when we learn to listen.
