A Communist Youth - Mar. 1

A Communist Youth

The very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life (John 6:63).

Dear friends:

Not too many years ago, atheistic communism was a negative spiritual force threatening much of the world.  Since the vast change came about in the former Soviet Union, it is much less so.  Now the world has another radical spiritual force with which to contend.

It is interesting how such forces can obtain fanatical allegiance from their followers.  Many years ago during the crest of world communism's popularity, Billy Graham shared a letter that a young American college student had written to his fianci, explaining why he had to break their engagement:

"We communists have a high casualty rate.  We live in virtual poverty, and turn back every penny we make above what is absolutely necessary to keep us alive.  We communists don't have the time or the money for movies, concerts, or T-bone steaks or decent homes or new cars.  I am in dead earnest.  It is my life, my business, my religion, my sweetheart, my wife, my mistress, my bread and meat.  I work at it in the daytime and dream about it a night.  Its hold on me grows, not lessens, as time goes by.  Therefore, I cannot carry on a friendship, a love affair, or even a conversation without relating it to this force which both drives and guides my life.  I've already been in jail because of my ideas and if necessary I am ready to go before a firing squad."

We are shocked and saddened at such a misguided life, and the misguided lives we see today, such as with suicide bombers who sacrifice their own lives just to kill innocent women and children.  They are driven by dark spiritual forces, which we want to avoid.

However, God calls us to lay down our own lives for the sake of the gospel.   Our Lord says, "Any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple" (Luke 14:33, NIV).

But He also says, "I tell you the truth... no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields -- and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life" (Mark 10:29-30, NIV).

Commitment to negative spiritual forces produces destruction, death and unhappiness.  In fact, communist pioneer V.I. Lenin (1870-1924) made a strange but true statement, "We are dead men on furlough."  Some terrorists today speak of loving death.  Satan is using them to counterfeit what the Word of God says about death to self and commitment.  Commitment to our Lord and His gospel produces love, joy, peace, hope and eternal life.

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,

Bill Bright
