A Fish Story
All Scripture is inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16, NLT).
This story recently came to my attention.
There was this Christian lady that had to do a lot of traveling for her business, so she did a lot of flying. Flying made her nervous, so she always took her Bible
along with her to read because it helped relax her. (Taking along the Bible and reading it is a good idea in any case!)
One time she was sitting next to a man. When he first saw her reading her Bible, he gave a little chuckle and went back to what he was doing. Then after awhile he could not resist saying something, so he turned to her and asked, "You don't really believe all that stuff in there do you?"
The lady replied, "Of course I do. It's the Bible."
He said, "Well, what about that guy who was swallowed by a whale?
She replied, "Oh, Jonah. Yes, I believe that. It's in the Bible.
He asked, "Well, how do you suppose he survived all that time inside the whale?"
The lady said, "Well, I don't really know. I guess when I get to heaven
I will ask him."
"What if he isn't in heaven?" the man asked sarcastically.
"Then you can ask him," replied the lady.
Now that is a funny story, but it is also tragic because that sarcastic man represents the attitude of much of the world. Many people are without the knowledge of the overwhelming empirical evidence of the reliability of the Scriptures, do not know about our Lord, and are without His forgiveness and eternal life.
For just one example, the Son of God Himself, our Lord Jesus Christ, believed and taught the Bible's complete inspiration and reliability. The One who is considered by even non-Christians as the wisest and most saintly person who ever lived taught the infallibility of the Bible, saying such things as, "It is written... Search the Scriptures... Have you read... Scripture cannot be broken."
He spoke of the total accuracy of even the "jot" and "tittle," the smallest characters of the Hebrew alphabet.
He spoke confidently about past events and people, such as Noah and the ark, Jonah and the whale, Abraham and Moses. The holy Son of God could not deceive, nor was He ignorant, having all knowledge.
When you believe the Bible, you are in good company, not only with many of the great scholars of the centuries, but more important, in company with God's only begotten Son!
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
