An Extreme Penny Pincher! - July 22

An Extreme Penny Pincher!

Those who are stingy will lose everything (Proverbs 11:24).

Dear friends:

Have you ever heard the term "penny pincher," and the expression, "He can pinch a penny so thin you can see through it?

Hetty Green was the extreme epitome of those words.  For many years, she was called America's greatest miser.  When she died in 1916, she left an estate valued at 100 million dollars, an especially vast fortune for that day, comparable to more than a billion today.

But in spite all her vast wealth, Hetty was so miserly that she ate cold oatmeal in order to save the expense of heating the water.  When her son had a severe leg injury, she took so long trying to find a free clinic to treat him that his leg had to be amputated because of advanced infection.

It has been said that Hetty hastened her own death by bringing on a seizure while arguing the merits of skim milk because it was cheaper than whole milk.

Although Hetty Green is an extreme example, many people have a miserly outlook on life.  The life of some people is cold and miserly, instead of demonstrating the warmth and generosity of God's love to those around them.

God is the perfect example of generosity.  He loved the world so much that He "GAVE" His only begotten Son (John 3:16).  Jesus loved us so much that He "GAVE" His life as a ransom for many (Matthew 20:28).  This was the supreme sacrifice.

The Bible tells us to imitate God (Ephesians 5:1).  And Jesus said, "Give to everyone who asks you" (Luke 6:30, NIV), and "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you" (Luke 6:38, NIV), a command with a promise.

Our Lord has given us so much more than we ever deserved, but also in making us co-heirs with Him.  Galatians chapter 4, verse 7, reads: "You are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir" (NIV).

In being a fruitful disciple, we need to imitate Christ in our generosity and to examine ourselves to see if there are any hindrances in our life to showing generosity to others.

Let us not be miserly like Hetty Green!

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
Bill Bright
