Believing Is Seeing - August 30

Believing Is Seeing

Anything is possible if a person believes (Mark 9:23).

Dear friends:

How many times have you heard it said that "seeing is believing"?

The story is told of a postmaster who knew everyone in the small town where he lived.  A new family moved into the town and asked the postmaster what kind of people lived there.

He answered them with a question, "What kind of people do you think you'll find?"

One of the family said, "Well, we had problems with the people in the town we just left.  I suppose they will be the same here."

The postmaster replied, "You're probably right."

Soon another family moved into the town and asked the postmaster the same question.

Again he responded, "What kind of people do you expect to find here?"

They answered, "The folks in the town we left were great.  We hated to leave.  We hope we'll find some more just like them here."

The postmaster responded, "I'm sure you will.   You'll love it here."

As this wise man knew, even though people say, "seeing is believing," the truth actually is, "believing is seeing."

I am reminded of the Proverbs 23:7, which in the King James Version says, "As (a man) thinketh in his heart, so is he."  What we believe in our hearts, and our inward attitudes toward God and other people, affect our outward attitudes and behavior.

There is rich truth in Romans 10:8-9: "For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved" (NLT).

This passage speaks of believing in our hearts, and this prompts an expression to the outside world through a confession with our mouths.  By biblical principle, we receive what we believe in our hearts and confess with our mouths.

Jesus taught this belief principle consistently.  On one occasion He said, "Anything is possible if a person believes" (Mark 9:23, NLT).

To His doubting disciple, Thomas, who had just confessed, "My Lord and my God!"  Jesus said, "You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who haven't seen me and believe anyway" (John 20:28-29, NLT).

Let us be believers and not doubters.  The world says, "Seeing is believing."  But God says, "First, believe me, then you shall see."

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
Bill Bright
