Blessings Through Adversity
God turned into good what you meant for evil (Genesis 50:20).
With God's people, the devil always loses!
A dear, beloved friend in a major city was a most prominent business and social leader with whom I had great fellowship. In fact, in the early 1950's, I introduced him to our Savior, and he always expressed his gratitude. We would talk about the Lord whenever we visited together.
With the passing of time, this major pillar in the city, in fact one of the great business leaders of his state, became ill with cancer. As his body was ravaged with this disease, he was drawn closer and closer to our Lord. He and his wife read the Scriptures morning and night and during the day. They sang hymns of praise to God.
On several occasions, he said to me, "I'm so glad I have cancer because it was only when I discovered cancer that my relationship with Christ really became intimate. I'd known about Christ. I had received Christ. I went through the ritual of being a Christian but somehow it was not until I became ill and faced my eternal destiny that I looked up and saw the loving, forgiving grace of God. As a result of cancer I can say I am closer and my relationship with Christ is more intimate. Had it not been for cancer I would probably have continued to be a typical Christian church-goer, living according to certain biblical standards, but I would have missed out on the glory and the adventure of knowing Jesus personally."
I had the privilege of preaching his memorial service along with his pastor. It was a marvelous time of celebration as this great man, who had known the best that the world had to offer, and because of adversity came to know the best that God has to offer.
God was not the author of that hideous cancer. But He uses evil for His own purposes.
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
