Do It Before It Is Too Late
The children of the godly stand firm (Proverbs 12:7).
Josh McDowell, a dear friend and co-laborer for more than 35 years, heads a powerful ministry that is a vital part of Campus Crusade for Christ International.
As a part of Josh's "Why Wait?" campaign, the Barna Research Group in Glendale, California assisted several evangelical denominations in conducting a national survey among their youth. Here is a sampling of the results that relate to parent and teen relationships.
75 percent of the youth said they were very close or fairly close to their father.
89 percent described the same relationship with their mother.
51 percent of the youth said they seldom or never talk to their father about personal concerns.
67 percent said they frequently or occasionally asked their father for advice.
87 percent said they frequently or occasionally felt proud of their father. 91percent felt the same way about mother.
91 percent said their parents frequently or occasionally spend time with them.
Only 58 percent said they frequently or occasionally did something special with their father that involved just the two of them.
53 percent said they spend less than 15 minutes each week talking to their father about things that matter to the youth.
Only 53 percent said their home is a place where they felt secure and loved.
The survey was conducted among church young people (96 percent claimed to be Christians) and is almost identical to a larger sampling of Christian evangelical young people.
This survey is revealing, and should cause all parents to take inventory of their own situation.
The parts that disturbed me the most were: "51 percent of the youth said they seldom or never talk to their father about personal concerns.... Only 58 percent said they frequently or occasionally did something special with their father that involved just the two of them. 53 percent said they spend less than 15 minutes each week talking to their father about things that matter to the youth."
It has been said that no man, at the point of death, with maybe only minutes or seconds left on this earth, has ever regretted that he did not spend more time at the office, or otherwise working. But no doubt many have regretted not spending enough time with their children.
Let us love our children, cherish them, and spend quality time with them. They soon grow up, and we will be gone, and it will be too late.
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
