How wonderful it is, how pleasant, when brothers live together in harmony (unity: KJV)! (Psalms 133:1).
It is not always easy to dwell in unity and harmony. We must continually work on it.
In the early 1980's the Lord strongly impressed upon me the need for us to relocate the international headquarters of Campus Crusade for Christ to another major city. There were several factors that contributed to this, among them the fact that we had long since outgrown our facilities in California. We were no longer operating efficiently, and we were faced with the fact that if we chose to stay at Arrowhead Springs, we would have a major building effort, and there were many factors which militated against us. So, I assigned a committee of staff members to evaluate 38 cities with 56 criteria. The list of possible cities included Orlando, Florida.
During the evaluation process, I visited in Orlando, and found a group of about 500 business and professional people had gathered together at their own expense for a luncheon to insist that we move to Orlando. Many of the leading business people, professionals, pastors, leading laymen and women, the mayor of the city and other prominent officials were saying, "Please come to Orlando! We will make it worth your while!"
From Orlando, I had a telephonic board meeting with our board and we discussed the potential there in light of all the other cities we had considered. The board agreed that we should accept the invitation and move to Orlando.
When I announced to our godly staff leaders that the board had decided to move to Orlando, there was a unanimous negative reaction: "We don't want to go to Orlando," and they gave the various reasons.
The Lord gave me a strong impression that I should say to them, "Whatever you want to do is fine with me. You go back to the drawing board and you decide where we are to go, and I am sure the board will agree.
They went back to the drawing board, prayed and evaluated the various cities and the many factors concerning where we should go, and finally after 30 days they came to me to announce that, "We believe we should go to Orlando."
Interestingly enough, they had done their research carefully, had sent staff members to meet with the leaders of education, police, and church officials and in the process had been treated so beautifully and so enthusiastically by the people of the Orlando area that they were now as excited about moving to Orlando as were Vonette and I.
Expressed through the unity of the brethren, God revealed His will, which has been confirmed many times.
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
