God's Unusual Answer
We live by believing and not by seeing (2 Corinthians 5:7).
As a young Christian, I hungered and thirsted after God and righteousness with all of my heart.
There were long days of fasting and prayer, crying out to God for His power to be released in and through my life.
Then one day God graciously answered me in a way I had not anticipated. He taught me a great spiritual principle that has been a cornerstone truth in my life and the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ ever since.
He helped me to understand that the emotional experience that I was seeking was not necessarily what He had for me. I learned that we live the Christian life by faith as an act of the will. He taught me the importance of BELIEVING His Word (faith) then ACTING upon it as a choice of my will. Faith is an action word, not passive.
I began to realize that this principle is the key to receiving everything from God. Believe and receive. We do not have to wait upon our emotions, which usually follow obedience, depending on our emotional makeup. This is true for salvation itself, and the infilling of the Holy Spirit, both of which are by faith. Though emotions are valid, the act of seeking an emotional experience can grieve the Spirit because the Scripture teaches that the true believer in Christ lives by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7).
For example, with the infilling of the Spirit, we know it is God's will because of His COMMAND, "Be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18). Without waiting on our emotions, we ask, believe and receive because of His PROMISE, "We can be confident that he will listen to us whenever we ask him for anything in line with his will. And if we know he is listening when we make our requests, we can be sure that he will give us what we ask for" (1 John 5:14-15, NLT).
I have learned to surrender my will to the Lord Jesus Christ and by faith draw upon those supernatural resources which are already available to me through Christ, in whom dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. That hunger and thirst after righteousness was fulfilled and so it has been all these wonderful years of adventure walking with Christ.
God heard my prayers. He answered, and satisfied the deepest longings of my heart.
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
