How To Find Happiness
Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven
Where can people find happiness?
In answer to this question, Clarence McCartney said, "It's not found in pleasure."
Lord Byron lived such a life if anyone did. But he wrote, "The worm, the canker, and the grief are mine alone."
Happiness is not found in money. Jay Gould, the American multi-millionaire, had plenty of that. But when dying, he said, "I suppose I am the most miserable man on earth."
It's not found in position and fame. Lord Beaconsfield enjoyed more than his share of both. He wrote, "Youth is a mistake, manhood a struggle, and old age a regret."
It's not found in military glory. Alexander the Great conquered the known world in his day. Having done so, he wept in his tent because, he said, "There are no more worlds to conquer."
How then can one find happiness?
The answer is simple, and provided by our Lord. "Happy are those who long to be just and good, for they shall be completely satisfied. Happy are the kind and merciful, for they shall be shown mercy. Happy are those whose hearts are pure, for they shall see God. Happy are those who strive for peace -- they shall be called the sons of God. Happy are those who are persecuted because they are good, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs" (Matthew 5:6-10. TLB). (The word "blessed" in some translations is from the Greek word "makarios," which can also be translated "happy.")
Our Lord went on to say, "When you are reviled and persecuted and lied about because you are my followers -- wonderful! Be happy about it! Be very glad! for a tremendous reward awaits you up in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted too" (vs.11-12).
A modern secular song exhorts, "Don't worry, be happy." But a famous Christian hymn gives the real key to happiness:
"When we walk with the Lord, in the light of His Word, what a glory He sheds on our way. While we do His good will, he abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey. Trust and obey, for there's no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey."
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
