Losers Are Winners!
If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find true life (Luke 9:24).
A friend had arranged a blind date for Rick. The date's name was Patti.
The two of them went to the beach with a group of young people from Rick's church, but neither Rick nor Patti was having a good time. Neither was what the other had expected, and each thought, "This is the worst date I've ever had."
Rick especially felt betrayed, and his pride was offended. He sat on a rock facing the ocean for a long time, thinking. Finally, he realized that he would have to submit to the teaching of God's Word to honor Patti above himself. He would lose face, but he had to apologize to her for his attitude and his behavior.
Interestingly, Rick lost, yet he won. He lost his pride, but he won the girl.
When he apologized to her, he discovered what a sensitive and thoughtful girl she was. He arranged for another date, and several months later they were married! They now have a family and are active in a nationwide ministry, speaking to young people about our wonderful Lord. That ministry would never have been possible if he had resisted the leadership of the Holy Spirit, or if he had not been obedient to God's Word.
Have you ever felt like fighting to have your own way? It seems there is something in us -- ego, false pride -- that just must always win!
Yet we are taught in God's holy Word that to win the important things in life, we must lose something. Losers become winners when they voluntarily give up control of their lives through submission, obedience, and willing surrender to our Lord Jesus Christ and His perfect direction of our lives.
In God's economy, winners in the world can become losers in God's kingdom, and losers in the world can become winners. Jesus taught this paradox: "For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it" (Luke 9:24, NIV).
We can be assured that by following our Lord Jesus Christ and obeying Him, allowing His Holy Spirit to fill and control us, loving others and putting their interests above our own, we will always be winners.
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
