We can be confident that he will listen to us whenever we ask him for anything in line with his will (1 John 4:14).
Whenever we yield to temptation in our Christian walk, it just takes a small reminder of God's greatness, love, forgiveness and faithfulness to bring us back on track.
A distraught young woman whose fianci had died of cancer once came to me for counsel. She was angry at God. As we reviewed Romans 8:28 together, I asked her, "Do you really believe that all things work together for good for those who love God?"
"No," she said, "I don't believe that verse."
As I counseled with her, she began to realize that she could trust God and thank Him in the midst of her sorrow. Peace flooded her troubled heart as she obeyed God's command in 1 Thessalonians 5:18: "Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (NIV).
A man who had been a wonderful Christian for many years was telling another man that he had never known an hour of defeat in his fifty years of Christian life.
"What!" said the other man in astonishment, "You have never known any defeat in your Christian life?"
"No, I didn't put it that way," said the first man. "I've known many moments of temporary defeat, but never an hour. I always get back into fellowship immediately by confessing my sin and claiming the promise from God's word, recorded in 1 John 1:9: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
Someone said you can't keep a bird from landing on your head, but you can keep him from building a nest in your hair. Temptation is not sin, but yielding to temptation is sin. If we are on the verge of yielding to a temptation to disobey God, or if we begin to meditate upon a sinful thing or act, we must quickly ask the Lord Jesus to take control of our mind and cleanse it with His precious blood, to control our will, our thought life, and everything about us.
We breathe spiritually, by exhaling, confessing any doubt or other sin according to 1 John 1:9; then we inhale by claiming by faith a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit according to 1 John 5:14-15: "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of him." This biblical prescription has worked for me and millions of others for many years.
Memorize and always remember God's promises. "God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it" (1 Corinthians 10:13, NIV).
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
