The Cost Of The Message - Insights from Bill Bright - Dec. 18
The Cost Of The Message
I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ (Romans 1:16).
"I don't wear my religion on my sleeve," the man said. " My religion is personal and private, and I don't want to talk about it."
The man who made this statement was one of America's leading statesmen. He was a professing Christian with whom I was visiting just off the campus of Harvard University, where he was a guest speaker. I had just asked him to become involved with a thousand key Christian leaders in a great worldwide effort to help fulfill the Great Commission.
His statement startled me. So I asked him, "You are a Christian, aren't you?" He said, "Yes, but I'm not a religious fanatic."
Grieved by his logic, I continued to prod him gently: "Did it ever occur to you that it cost Jesus Christ His life so that you could call yourself a Christian? It cost the disciples their lives, too, and millions of Christians throughout the centuries have suffered or died as martyrs in order to get the message of God's love and forgiveness to you. Now do you really believe that your faith in Christ is personal and private and that you shouldn't talk about it?"
As quick as a flash, he replied, "No, sir. I'm wrong," he said with a new meekness. "Tell me what I can do about it."
Many people are intimidated about mentioning the name of Jesus and sharing their faith. But many have never thought about what it has cost others through the centuries to get God's message to us. We are greatly privileged and blessed to have the gospel so freely and easily shared with us, to have Bibles and Christian books everywhere, and Christian radio and television stations and programs on the air 24 hours a day. But millions have sacrificed greatly to help make this happen.
With the help and power of the Holy Spirit, let us be bold to share with others the message of our great God and Savior. It is a matter of life or death.
Also, the Lord said, "I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God. But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God" (Luke 12:8-9, NIV).
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
