A Baker's Beliefs

According to Fox News, Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cakeshop is under investigation by the Attorney General of Colorado for respectfully declining to sell a wedding cake to a gay couple, due to his religious beliefs. If Phillips loses the case, he could spend up to a year in jail.

This surfaces a question for many Christians to ponder. “Is it ever appropriate to refuse to serve someone due to religious reasons?”

On one hand, Jesus taught in Matthew 22, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

But Jesus also taught in Luke 17:1, “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come.”

Resolving this tension requires much prayer. It also requires loving others, without endorsing things counter to God’s commands. How would you respond?
