Hershey’s Hidden Motive
By Rick Boxx
December 2, 2011

In a biography written about Hershey’s founder, Milt Hershey, one of his plant employees didn’t have enough money to take the trolley home, so Mr. Hershey paid for his ride. When someone nearby commented about Mr. Hershey’s generosity, he pointed out that he owned the trolley and he knew the money would come back to him.

Mr. Hershey seemed to realize the difference between giving a gift out of a pure motive versus giving out of self interest.

1 Corinthians 4:5 says, “Wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.”

The next time you’re generous, ask yourself whether your motive was selfish or pure.
