God's Debt Reduction Plan
by Rick Boxx
March 22, 2010

Household debt is declining, according to The Wall Street Journal, but over 80% of the decline came from lenders writing off bad debts.

This wouldn't be the case if we adhered to God's original plan. God desired His people to be debt free every 7 years. Today, lenders make 40 year mortgage loans, 20 year credit card loans, and 10 year car loans, significantly driving up prices of homes and cars.

In Nehemiah's day they also ignored God's principles and suffered the consequences. Their solution was to make a covenant with God. In Nehemiah 10:31 they promised, "Every seventh year we will forgo working the land and will cancel all debts."

Whether or not you believe these Old Testament principles apply today, wouldn't being debt free every seven years be refreshing?
