And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new doctrine is of which you speak?” (Acts 17:19)
The philosophers presented no accusation against Paul, but in the presence of the court they asked this penetrating question. Paul stood alone in the presence of brilliant teachers who wanted to know whether his views transcended their own. Before a completely pagan audience, Paul was now facing people who had never heard of Israel’s God, but they were curious about what he had to say. In the same way, we shouldn’t prematurely assume that our sophisticated, jaded culture doesn’t want to hear the simple, plain-spoken message of the gospel.
