“Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go.” (John 21:18)
For Peter to feed the sheep means that he would never be his own again. Likewise, if you are a real feeder of the sheep, you give yourself away. This involves a wonderful contrast. Jesus is essentially telling Peter, “When you were young, you went where you wanted to, but you won’t in the future. I will take you where I want to take you. Ultimately, you will lay down your life for feeding the sheep.”
In Living in the In-Between Times, Pastor Ralph Douglas West brings the story of the Old Testament prophet Samuel to life, showing you how God speaks in your “in betweens” and what it looks like to live faithfully in these seasons of waiting and wondering.
