What One Girl Can Do - She Seeks - Week of January 5

  • 2015 Jan 05

{what one girl can do.}
an inspirational entry about the power of one

-- noun
1. a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering

I couldn't believe it. I stood there in the heat of that African sun as tears poured down my face. My heart was racing, and I truly felt at a loss for words.

There were more people than we had Bibles for.

Men, women, and children who lived in the most unbelievable conditions weren't just hungry for food; they were hungry for a touch from God. And yet I couldn't even offer all of them one...one Bible. It seemed so unfair...and the pit in my stomach remains at the thought, even today, years later.

When I got home from my trip, I sat in my room and just wept. I hated being home. No one seemed to understand why I hated being able to use the bathroom and flush the toilet -- or to have the privilege to walk into the kitchen, open up my pantry to eat something and go to the faucet to get water.

Because while I was doing this everyday stuff in my everyday life, I now knew that clear across planet earth, people were sleeping on dirt floors. Babies were left outside with no diapers, bottles or even a toy. And I knew that on Sunday, herds of people would walk over 50 miles just to get to a church -- while we would groan about a sermon going ten minutes over schedule.

I just wanted to get back on a plane and go back to Kenya to bring Bibles, feed children and give them a little taste of the fortune that they so badly deserved.

Was I just a young, naive or a foolish girl to think that I alone could ever change the world?

No. Because you would be amazed at what one person can do.

This past week I once again boarded a plane and flew to El Salvador to experience how life is lived somewhere else. Much of the living conditions are the same as they are in Africa. Little boys and girls go hungry everyday and go years without medical care. People are hungry for something even more than food itself - they long for God's touch.

And this time I was in the company of ministry-minded people who feel the power of one: Compassion International. They are people with a strong desire to alleviate the suffering of one struck by misfortune, but they do something about it in the name of Jesus.

They go into the lowest of low places and provide miracles for people who have no hope. I was able to see and experience this amazing ministry at work and I can tell you, firsthand, that it's real. What they do is truly making a difference!

I am not satisfied just knowing what's happening on the other side of the world; I want to do something about it, too. Compassion International needs us. Together as one, we can all make a difference. By sponsoring one child, you will help alleviate suffering in their life. Thousands of people are joining in this movement of God and I promise, this is something you want to be apart of. Don't miss out!
