Mutual Submission in Marriage

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.
Ephesians 5:22-24

In Scripture, we find the chain of command for a Christian marriage. It is Christ, the husband, the wife and then the children. The husband and wife have been given different roles within the union of marriage, but there is a mutual submission to one another in the fear of the Lord (Ephesians 5:21). Both the husband and wife are to be in submission to Jesus Christ. Children are to obey their parents in the Lord (Ephesians 6:1).

I have found that there are husbands who will place great emphasis on the words, obey, submit and in everything. You see, a husband may demand a wife to submit to anything he desires sexually. Why? Usually, it is because he has been watching pornography. Although Hebrews 13:4 teaches: Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled..., seriously, a wife does not have to submit to him.

This is important because both husband and wife must respect each other sexually. If a husband or wife does not want to participate in something sexually, then their spouse needs to honor and respect them. If a spouse feels a genuine conviction about not doing something, they are never to be forced. A husband and wife need to be in agreement.

Understand, the relationship between a husband and wife should be exclusive (Proverbs 5:15-20). If a couple experiences marital problems, they can separate for a while to pray and fast (1 Corinthians 7:1-5). If a husband or wife desires to break off the separation because they have a need to come together sexually, then there needs to be a mutual submission. The marriage relationship is to be mutually agreeable. They are to come together in agreement so that there is no temptation to commit adultery.

When the king is abroad the queen must reign at home, and when he returns to his throne he is bound to look upon her as his crown, and prize her above gold and jewels.
~C.H. Spurgeon~
