Are You Ready to Follow the Lord?

Now these are the priests and the Levites who came up with Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua: Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra, Amariah, Malluch, Hattush, Shechaniah, Rehum, Meremoth, Iddo, Ginnethoi, Abijah, Mijamin, Maadiah, Bilgah, Shemaiah, Joiarib, Jedaiah, Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah, and Jedaiah. - Nehemiah 12:1-7

Going back to Nehemiah 8, we saw the revival that had come because the people were reading and studying God Word. It had been such a long time since the people had read the Word of God. In Nehemiah 9, the people of God continued in the Word and prayer. When they began to read the Scriptures, it caused great conviction, repentance and renewal of a covenant––an agreement with God.

In Nehemiah 10, they signed the document as they were ready to follow the Lord. The list of names continued through Nehemiah 10-12; it included the family names of priests and Levites who had returned from Babylon (Nehemiah 12:1-26).

During the year churches will take young adults to youth retreats and children to summer camps. While they are there, the youth and children spend uninterrupted time studying God’s Word and praying. As they listen to the studies, they often become convicted by the Word of God. At some youth retreats, while sitting around a bonfire, the leaders have those attending write on a piece of paper whatever they want to get rid of in their lives. It is as if they, too, have made a covenant with God. Then they will take that piece of paper and cast it into the fire.

However, understand it is one thing to offer God a passionate prayer of confession, and quite something else to live an obedient life after we say, “Amen.” Do we really mean what we pray? Are we truly ready to follow the Lord?

“Whoever desires to come after Me [Jesus], let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.”
~Mark 8:34~
