False Accusations

So the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests who were in Nob. And they all came to the king. And Saul said, “Hear now, son of Ahitub!” He answered, “Here I am, my lord.” Then Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as it is this day?”
1 Samuel 22:11-13

This is one of the most unnecessary, blood thirsty accounts I have read in the Bible. Deog had betrayed David’s whereabouts. Saul left and went to confront Ahimelechthe priest, the son of Ahitub, and his entire father’s house. Ahimelech was the son of Eli, the high priest.

Saul continued to be extremely paranoid. He arrived at Nob, angry and demanding answers. He interrogated Ahimelechthe priestwith his questions and false accusations. I believe some of Saul’s men were “yes” men. They stood with Saul and faced an awkward situation where they really needed to make a stand for righteousness. Instead they followed Saul’s wickedness. Saul was no longer walking with the Lord, and they should not have gone along with his ungodly counsel.

As Christians we should not listen and follow the advice of the ungodly. We have the correct and right counsel to follow in God’s Word:

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night (Psalm 1:1-2).

Whose counsel are you listening to today? The ungodly or the godly? Most importantly do you listen to the counsel written in God’s Word?

Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter days. There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand.
~Proverbs 19:20-21~
