A Model for Marriage

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
Ephesians 5:25-27

The Holy Spirit, dictating to Paul, began by giving only three verses of instruction to the women, but to husbands he gave almost half a chapter! In regards to the husband’s role in marriage, notice how many times the word love is used (Ephesians 5:22-33). A symbolic picture is given of the wife as likened to the Church, and the husband to Christ. God gave a model for marriage. Husbands are to love their wives as Christ love the Church. He sacrificially died on the Cross; He and gave Himself for the Church. The husband is to follow this pattern of Christ’s set example in their marriage. The whole marriage relationship is based on love.

God ordained marriage. Understand, there are no perfect marriages, but. God designed for a marriage to be Spirit-filled. In the Scriptures, both the husband and wife have been given great responsibilities. They are accountable for what they have read. A husband and wife must maintain their integrity within their marriage relationship.

In bookstores, radio and television, marriage is a big topic. I find it interesting that even though marriage is greatly discussed, couples attend weekly marriage study groups, and marriage conferences, there are still major problems within marriage relationships. Couples used to stay married, but not today. Married people will separate or go ahead and file for a divorce even after 30 years of marriage!

Think about it. How many people are completely compatible? Husbands and wives are so different. They have different likes and dislikes. They have to learn how to get along. The only way to get along in a marriage is by obeying the Scriptures––period.

As a husband, the Christian is to look upon the portrait of Christ Jesus, and he is to paint according to that copy...
